What this site knows about you

In detail

• One cookie — but only if you click yes in the banner. Say no or click nothing and none is set, and this visit cannot be linked to a later one.
• Google Analytics runs from the first page view. What is sent is the page you opened, device type, approximate region and your IP address; advertising signals and cross-device recognition are switched off. Without your yes it stays at those single cookieless messages.
• No Facebook pixel, no ad networks, nothing passed to advertisers.
• You can change your answer whenever you like: the link "Change counting choice" is at the bottom of every page.
• No fonts, maps or scripts from anybody else's servers, with one exception: the counting script, which is loaded from Google. Everything else the page needs sits on the same server as the page.
• No advertising, no ad networks, no recommendation algorithms.
• No account, no sign-up, no email address, no contact form.

What your browser stores anyway

The globe has a collector's pass: places you have opened get stamped, and you can set a home town. That lives in your own browser's storage (localStorage) and never leaves your device. We cannot see it and nor can anybody else. Clear your browser data and it is gone — there is no second copy.

What the server sees

Like every web server, this one unavoidably receives your IP address and which browser you use when it sends you a page — that is how the page reaches you at all. We do not analyse those records or build profiles from them; how long the hosting provider keeps server logs is a matter of their own default setting.

Links to elsewhere

Under every photograph you will find the photographer, the licence and a link to the original file on Wikimedia Commons. Those links lead to other people's websites with their own privacy rules. Nothing is loaded from them unless you click — until then nothing flows there.

Why so little

This site is made for children of roughly eight to twelve, and a child cannot really judge what consent means. So without an explicit yes no cookie is set and nothing is stored that could link a later visit to this one. Both buttons in the banner are the same size and the same weight — a banner designed to be clicked wrong would be a particularly shabby thing to put in front of a child. What is transmitted regardless is described above; we would rather say it plainly than leave it out.

If that ever changes, it will say so here and on the page about this site first — not in a banner you click away.

Who receives the counting data

Google Ireland Limited, and possibly Google LLC in the United States beyond that. What is transmitted is which page was opened when, plus device type, approximate region and the IP address. Advertising signals and cross-device recognition are switched off. That message goes out on the first page view, which is before you have clicked either button — that is the difference between "no cookie" and "nothing transmitted", and we would rather not blur it.

If that goes too far for you, click no in the banner — no cookie is set and this visit is not linked to a later one. The site keeps working completely and unchanged; no part of it requires consent. Anyone wanting no connection to Google at all can block googletagmanager.com — with any ordinary content blocker, or centrally on a school network. The site carries on unchanged.

Your rights

The GDPR and Swiss data protection law give you the right to ask what data is held about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to withdraw consent once given at any time. Withdrawing it is what the "Change counting choice" link at the bottom of every page does. For anything else, write to us — the address is in the imprint.
